If today after 75 years of independence, we talk about the role of women in politics, then major role of women in politics will be just voting. The major participation of women in politics can be seen as just political activism and voting.
After the 73rd amendment in 1992, which allotted one third of all seats to women, women have shown a bigger participation on ground level such as panchayat. Some of the states have raised women seats from 33% to 50%.
Women are holding the Post of President, PM and CM in various states. The first women CM was Sucheta Kripalani from UP. She was CM from the year 1963 to 67. Indira Gandhi was the first women Prime minister of India from the year 1980 to 84. She is the best example of women empowerment. Apart from Sucheta and Indira Gandhi, there are various women who are participating in Indian politics.
The recently held Parliamentary Lok Sabha election have seen a record of 59 women as members of Parliament. It’s the highest since independence.
The rise of Indian women as panchayat leaders is an unbelievable achievement, whereas women are mistreating in India. She is malnourished, supressed, uneducated, violated and discriminated.
It should be one of important policy to raise the number of women in politics. As the women participation will increase, the inferior status of women will also improve and crimes against women will diminish. Education is the biggest weapon which can improve the participation level of women.
