Article 15 of the Indian Constitution bars the State as well as its citizens from discriminating on the basis of caste, sex, race, religion or place of birth; however, it allows favourable distinction. As per the article, special provisions can be made for women and children.
The article does not even stop the State from making and implementing special provisions for the upliftment of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other socially and economically backward classes.
