The Election Commission of India regulates the elections to Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state legislative in India and also ensures the free a fair election with equal rights and maintains law and order in India. It gives us the right to choose our own ruler. If we look from past till now India has created a record unambiguous election. India is Known to be a Democratic country because here the leaders are conscript on the basis of the votes specified by the citizens of the country. The Democracy in our country is prolonged from so many years just because of the election commission, people have all the integrity to choose the minister suitable to proceed the growth. What we understand is that elections are the base for a democratic government whose responsibility is to protect and preserve the rights and the interest of the citizens. And they have to listen to the natives because in democracy the authority of the government derives solely from the consent of country’s people or in simple dialect, we can also say that in case of democratic government the chief decision makers are the citizens. And that’s how Election commission protects the democracy in our country. Thanks to the elections held at fixed regular intervals, the leaders are responsible towards the ordinary people and also accountable for all of their work. Election commission channelise the growing democracy aspiration in a more formal way so that in can be strictly followed by everyone. In India as the politics are deepening, the need to protect democracy has also deepened. It became necessary for the election commission to make it sure that there will no use of unfair means to revert the results of the votes. Although the parliament is also helping time to time by making laws that would help election commission in conducting elections. It holds the issuing of notification for conducting the elections, appointment of election agent, poling agents, providing symbols to the participating parties, filling nominations, withdrawal of candidate, taking polls and counting votes. It also helps in registering the eligible voters, removes disqualified voters also the voters card correction. It set a particular limit of expenses means it adjust the amount of money a party can use during campaigns or rallies. The election commission also checks that if any nominated political party has any kind of criminal record or not because in a democratic country people has a right to know that what kind of government are going to rule over them. It can be said that the Election Commission is like a Knight in the Shining Armour to protect the democracy of the country from unfair practices and out-turn in unbiased outcome. The EC asks the candidates to submit the information related to their social background, assets, spouse and qualifications. The candidates have to disclose this information to domestic public. The EC has also assembled rules and regulations regarding the political parties bribing the general public by giving them gifts, money, liquor and tobacco etc. This is a common problem during the period of elections. Various political parties use corrupt method to win the votes of citizens like buying votes and breaking code of conduct. These issues work as the loopholes in conducting elections which results in the biased decisions. These issues are also solved by the election commission. They made sure that this type of activities does not take place during elections. But still there is lack which is needed to be fixed like it is necessary to make the government more accountable and open to the general public. There is also a need to fill the critical gaps by existing laws. They should give a serious look towards the flow of black money during elections and also frame some suitable legislations to keep check on these parties. As India is a democratic country, there is a need for local bodies to be aware about the candidates registered for the elections, which is enclosed by the Election commission. Election commission is a sole body to conduct election in India and host the commendable voting changes required according to democracy. They protect the democracy in India by punishing the corrupt candidate who violate the law. Election commission is also responsible for the voting, that each and every voter give their preference by voting. And that’s how it works as a shiels for democracy.
