A good icebreaker question is a way of getting people involved and stirring the conversation up. It could be as short as a simple greeting or as long as someone’s life story, but it has to capture the interest of those being asked so that they’ll be willing to share.
An icebreaker question helps people become familiar with each other. Icebreakers are used in many different situations, such as meetings and games. The following paragraphs detail examples of icebreaker questions for specific circumstances.
In a board meeting or staff meeting, an icebreaker question would be something along the lines of “What was your favorite part about this past weekend?” This can help people who don’t typically socialize outside of work get to know the coworkers they work with all day long but really still know very little about. It can also be useful for employees to use during their first few days on the job; not only does it create a more relaxed atmosphere, but it gets them thinking about their weekend which may have been a week or even months ago.
Icebreaker questions are appropriate in most social situations where people need to get to know each other. For example, this might mean asking these kinds of icebreaker questions at parties, at gatherings with friends you haven’t seen in a while or just when you meet someone new. You can mix it up by phrasing the question multiple ways—for example, “What was your favorite part about your weekend?” and “Did you do anything fun over the weekend?” are both good choices. The idea is that they start conversations on topics everyone is interested in (their personal lives) but don’t require more than one person has knowledge of (thus, the other person won’t feel embarrassed or excluded).
When playing a game at a party or gathering, icebreaker questions are good for getting to know the other players. They will keep everyone engaged by asking questions that are easy to answer but require thought. An icebreaker question for a board game might be “What is your favorite board game?” or “What is your favorite sport?” For an icebreaker question for card games, it could be something along the lines of “In what city do you want to visit before you die?” These kinds of ice breaker questions allow people to share their interests and get out of their comfort zones a little bit. When everyone feels more comfortable with each other, the game can become even more fun.
